Lumpectomy refers to a procedure that removes the tumor from the breast with a rim of normal tissue breast around it. Women who undergo a lumpectomy are usually recommended to receive radiation following surgery. In most patients diagnosed with breast cancer, it’s possible to perform the lumpectomy.
In a lumpectomy, the tumor is removed from the breast with a rim of normal tissue around the tumor, with the goal to achieve what is called “clear margins.”
A postoperative pathology report of clear margins is the most desirable result because it means that the tissue around your tumor is free of cancer and you can proceed with rest of the breast cancer care.
Lumpectomy is also known as breast conservation therapy or a partial mastectomy. The recovery lumpectomy surgery is anywhere from two to four weeks.
Surgery is the centerpiece of the treatment of breast cancer. Depending on the size of the tumor, the size of the breast, and the stage of breast cancer, a woman facing a diagnosis of breast cancer must consider either a mastectomy or a lumpectomy with radiation therapy.

After lumpectomy, you have to wait for the final pathology report to decide on further care. Based on the final pathology report you might need additional surgery. Final pathology reports are usually ready within five to seven days after your procedure. Lumpectomy is an outpatient procedure.
